What Is NC Healthy Living? The Origin Story

“Wellness”.  It’s an interesting word because it can encompass so many different things.  Mental, emotional, physical, sexual, financial, social, occupational, interpersonal, environmental, spiritual, nutritional, and intellectual wellness… these topics are just a few examples of the things that can impact the quality of our life.  All of these subjects have been researched and discussed by countless experts.  But, when I started dreaming of NC Healthy Living, I was interested in learning about how where we live or visit can impact our wellness.  I want to know…Can being in North Carolina promote healthy living and a life filled with wellness?

Meet Me, Your Guide To NC Healthy Living

Hey there! My name is Taylor, and I am a Nurse Practitioner turned stay-at-home mom to two beautiful young babies.  My family moved to the Raleigh area of North Carolina from Virginia about two years ago, and ever since then, I have made it my mission to explore my new home.  In fact, I even started a blog about my adventures and my amazing new community called Eastern Wake Love.  You can learn more about me here!

Quickly, my love for exploring my new home started to grow and branch out.  With two little ones to care for and being on one household income, I knew exploring the entire state of North Carolina wasn’t feasible then.  So, I took to social media and Google to see how I could live vicariously through others.

My Journey: A Clinician’s Perspective On Hometown Wellness

But here’s the thing.  I found that, while so many social media channels were doing a great job of highlighting things like delicious, indulgent food, debating Eastern vs Western NC barbecue, or the new cool bar or brewery, or showing these amazing mountain views and sunset beach views, no one was talking about the everyday things that impact our health.  Coming from a clinical background, I wanted to learn more.  I wanted to know what I could do and where I could go to work on my health (because I am NOT perfect and am a constant work in progress!).  I found myself starting to wonder more and more…

question mark, knowledge, question-3255136.jpg

What do the hospitals and doctor’s offices look like here?  Are there any good yoga or exercise classes around?  Where should I go to enjoy nature if I’m not someone who can handle a 10-mile hike?  Where can I go to get a healthy-ish meal? What about a great dessert place if I’m vegan or gluten-free?  Where should I look if I want to retire in North Carolina? What sort of activities are out there that can help me be healthier?  Where’s a fun, safe place where I can take my kids to get some exercise?

More questions kept coming…

Where can I learn more about getting healthier near my home? What sort of retreats or spas are out there for the times when I can indulge in those services?  How can I get more involved in my community and make new friends? What local products are out there that can help me live a healthier life? What vacation spots are out there that can promote my wellness and be relaxing and/or family-friendly?

Don’t get me wrong.  I love a good, indulgent meal.  And the argument over NC barbecue is always entertaining.  But I found myself craving information I couldn’t find on social media or Google without sifting through countless websites, often with dry, clinical, or municipal content or some generic advice that could be applied anywhere.

And so, NC Healthy Living was born.

NC Healthy Living’s Mission

The mission is simple: In a fun, honest, and easy-to-understand way, I want to show you all of the different ways health and wellness can be enhanced in the beautiful state of North Carolina.  And if I can help teach some nurse-approved tips to help you live a healthier life along the way, then great!  But I want to help you find the local resources and share inspiring stories to help you thrive.

Why Focus on North Carolina?

Well, here are my top four reasons:

  1. North Carolina is a powerhouse for healthcare.  This state houses some of the most world-renowned universities, healthcare providers, and healthcare systems.  Let’s start showing how having access to these people and places can improve your life in times of not just illness but also when seeking wellness.
  2. North Carolina is known for innovation.  Technology and healthcare will always go hand-in-hand, so let’s explore what is being created or supported here that can help improve your health.
  3. North Carolina is filled with natural beauty.  Let’s explore how North Carolina’s nature and access to it can enhance your well-being.
  4. The culture here is amazing.  The food, music, museums, artists, local goods, entrepreneurs, small local businesses, and the people.  And everywhere you go in the state, it’s a little different.  I want to explore and tell the stories of how these North Carolina communities and all that comes from them can support your health and improve your quality of life.

What Qualifies Me to Give You Advice on NC Healthy Living?

If you’re wondering why this advice should come from me- here’s what I’ve got!

  1. I’m a clinician with a Master’s degree in Nursing.  I trained and practiced as a Family Nurse Practitioner before stepping back from my career for my own health and my family.  I care about using research-backed information and love helping and teaching people.  I’m also a little on the “crunchy” side and embrace the conversation and consideration of complementary alternative therapies.
  2. I have personally dealt with chronic illness, and I understand how improving your health, even in small steps, can drastically improve your quality of life.
  3. I’m not perfect.  I’m not super young.  I don’t have the perfect body.  I don’t get enough sleep, and I eat too many sweets.  But I will be kind and honest with you. I’m not striving for perfection but to create a community of respect, kindness, and understanding.
  4. I firmly believe that you’ve got to laugh, try to have fun, and appreciate the beauty of simplicity in your life.  Sometimes, gratitude and nature can go a long way in the search for fulfillment.
  5. I care about helping people from all walks of life.  I want to advise you on things I would do for my kids and friends or share with my parents.  No matter who you are or where you’re from, everyone can benefit from this beautiful place, and I can’t wait to show you how!
